Southern Washington Volcanos and Lookouts Red and Burley

panoramic video -- This third panoramic video is much closer
to Hood and contains the best look at Mt St Helens we had on
the whole trip.

In the Indian Heaven Wilderness, Red Mtn was the most southerly of our destinations. It is also the only location from which Mt Adams and St Helens are at least somewhat north. The location was clouded over when we first arrived and we were actually sitting, facing the wrong way when it lifted and Mt Adams was first revealed... Surprise!!!

We have little use and patience for the crazy people rolling into designated campgrounds at all hours, blaring their music and whooping up in a generally disorderly (and likely drunk) fashion. We found a very quiet side road off of FS 23 to camp. We were just at a wide spot in the road, but not a single car went by in the middle of the night.

Finally, we stayed the night in the Fire lookout on Burley Mtn. This was kinda fun if you can ignore the mice scrabbling around in the middle of the night and the intoxicated motorcyclist and his girlfriend that showed up at 9:30 PM. They insisted on coming into the building with us to look around and then ran their engine for about an hour while they set up camp a couple hundred feet away... The mice were less obnoxious.

When we arrived at the Burley lookout, we found the window
shutters down. It was too difficult to open them with just the two
of us, so this hole in the north facing shutter was our only view out.

Views from Red Mtn

This is the caption for a 100% image container. The advantage to this method is dynamic sizing of both the image and the caption as represented by this text.
This was our best look at St Helens of all the 6 lookouts. When I first saw it, I though I was looking at Rainier with clouds obscuring the top. Then the clouds lifted enough that I could see that it had no top.
This was also our closest approach to Mt Hood.

Our 4th of July Camp

I do not mind other people firing off their fireworks until all hours of the night on the 4th of July as long as I am a loooong way away in the mountains. This is the kind of fire work that I like!
Our camp was actaully closer to Adams than any of the lookouts.

Burley Mtn Lookout

There were not a lot of views when we were at Burley as the clouds kept moving in and out. These three placcards were rather cool. This one looked east and included Mt Adams. Too bad this one is a bit hard to read in the picture.
This one looking North includes Watch and HighRock to the left of Rainier. A fun perspective as we were just there the week before.
Looking south... It claims Mt St Helens was out there, but we never saw it.
