You are looking at the demise of the dedicated GPS for wilderness
travel use. There are actually two tracks here, one in read and one
blue. One of these tracks was recorded on a $400 (Maps NOT included!)
Garmin dedicated GPS, the other with an iPhone 6s with a $20 app (Gaia
GPS) installed (cost depends on you plan, but most of you did not buy
it just to be a GPS! My old iPhone 4s
had some severe limitations for use as a GPS. For instance, it would
shut down in less than 20 degree weather. I was in 10 - 15 degree
weather when we ascended Mt Margaret last week. I had my 6s on the
whole time without a problem. Also, the battery on the 4s would not
support a full day of tracking. My phone was tracking for 7+ hours (in
airplane mode) today and as I am looking at it tonight I still have
about 75% battery life left even after checking my email etc. on the way home from the trip. In my opinion, the iPhone/Gaia GPS app
is easier to learn and use. I am running out of reasons to keep using
my Garmin. Anyone want to buy my Garmin? ... cheap!
