There are about 95 Fire Lookout Sites in and around the Olympic mountains and Washington Coast... Why don't I know how many there are? One reason is that some sites were only in use for a very short period of time and there are not enough records to confirm the use of a site. Another reason is that some sites we think of a fire lookout sites were actually only used for Aircraft Warning Systems. I will be marking these as AWS in my lists.
In the Oympics, there is one structure Kari and I have hiked to that one researcher lists as AWS only. That is Pyramid Mountain overlooking Lake Crescent. This structure is very different looking than the other fire lookouts in Washington. It is also listed on the firelookout.com website. So who is right? Which way is more accurate?
The approach Kari and I have agreed to is to visit all of the sites that have a structure on it... by any definition. This will put the total at something like 97.
Fall 2019 update: Several more people have recently finished the most accepted list of 93 maintained on Peakbaggers here. I will be adjusting my pages to this list with comments. On this page, the Pyramid structure mentioned above is included on the list.
